Zac Purton's quest for history at Happy Valley
Zac Purton is on the cusp of achieving a remarkable feat in Hong Kong's racing history. With eight chances to ride two winners on Wednesday, Purton aims to surpass the 2,000 victory mark, a record currently held by Douglas Whyte. This milestone, which Purton will reach in January 2025, marks a significant achievement in his illustrious career.
The 43-year-old Australian Racing Hall of Famer maintains a calm and focused approach, emphasizing his dedication to winning each race. "I’m just trying to win every race," he states, "giving every horse the best chance I can." This mindset, he believes, is key to his success, and he remains cautious yet optimistic about his chances.
Purton's strategy is to take it one race at a time, adapting to the unique challenges of Happy Valley. The track's recent bias adds an extra layer of complexity, making it crucial to assess the track conditions upon arrival. "It’s a little bit of a look and see," he explains, "but if I can get the right runs on the horses, then hopefully I can ride a couple of winners."
Among the horses he'll be riding, Honest Witness and Armor Golden Eagle stand out as potential key players. Honest Witness, trained by David Hayes, is a four-year-old with a recent impressive win over Golden Friendship. Purton praises Hayes' training, noting the horse's gradual improvement and comfort.
Additionally, Purton and Hayes will team up with Withallmyfaith in the Class Four Rhine Handicap, while Armor Golden Eagle seeks back-to-back wins in the Class Three Sauternes’s Cup. Purton's partnership with Mark Newnham and Exceed The Wish in the Class Five Dordogne Handicap further highlights his versatility and skill.
As Purton navigates this pivotal moment in his career, his focus remains on the process rather than the outcome. "At the end of the day, if that happens, then a few of them will win and the numbers will start adding up," he says, embodying the spirit of a dedicated professional.
The anticipation surrounding Purton's potential achievement is palpable, with fans eagerly awaiting history in the making. As he embarks on this final stretch, Purton's approach and expertise position him as a strong contender to etch his name in the annals of Hong Kong racing history.
